Fascinating first-person account of a Massachusetts boy who was educated in Europe and returned to the U.S. to enlist in the Union Army during the Civil War. As a infantry officer he rose to the rank of Brevet Major before suffering a wound which took him out of the service. Later, after the War, he was recommissioned in the Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is mostly remembered as one of the best military historians of the 19th century and has his own Wikipedia page.

His day-by-day diary reflects his Civil War service from just before the 1862 Peninsula Campaign through July 1 1863---the first day at Gettysburg---when he was seriously wounded. His diary covers combat, logistics, red tape, food in camp and many other aspects of a soldier's life. I really enjoyed it.
