I really love the way Patricia Wentworth writes her mysteries. We have too many authors, even the good authors, who hide all the crucial evidence until the end of the book when all the characters are assembled in a room where the protagonist can reveal all.

Ms. Wentworth usually does it the other way around. In many of her books, early on, sometimes even in the first chapter, we are provided enough evidence to decide who the evil person is, but not enough to make us 100% sure. Then, throughout the book, more evidence is revealed to us bit by bit. How Ms. Wentworth does this is marvelous. Allowing us to see for ourselves the way the evidence piles up, but often in a way we didn't anticipate early on.

While reading this book, there was actually a point when I exclaimed out loud, "This is great. I love the way she writes."

During 1940, Anne Jocelyn was caught in Nazi occurpied France. Her husband rescued her, but Anne was shot while escaping. 3 l/2 years later Anne returns to London explaining everything. Her husband does not believe her. An excellent story. My favorite by Wentworth so far.

Ms Wentworth captured my attention right from the start and the book took some turns which I didn't expect. Miss Silver is a treasure & one step ahead of the police.

You can't come home again...but maybe someone can, October 4, 2005
Reviewer: Gayle Surrette "omnivorous reader" (Brandywine, Maryland) -

A Miss Silver mystery though she doesn't show up until mid-way through the book. We start with a the return of a woman everyone thought had been buried 3 1/2 years ago. Her husband says it isn't her but other feel it would be terrible if you can home and no one wanted you any more. It seems a simple case of mistaken identity so long ago but it's the middle of WWII and things are never that simple.

Miss Silver and DS Frank Abbott think there's more going on with the death of a woman from the country, the mistaken identity, and the German spy network.

It's a quick read and the story is well laid out and the personalities all ring true in their confusion, anger, love, and hates. Rather more intricate plotting than in some other of Miss Siler mysteries.

I really loved this book. It's the first Miss Silver book I've read, and it's sure not to be the last. This is a story of mistaken identity...or is it? No one is sure, until Miss Silver shows up to help solve this mystery, of who the woman is who has returned home after being thought dead for nearly four years. Is she who she says she is or not? A very good read.

Another in the old-school British mystery series featuring Miss Silver (a Miss Marple clone); doesn't matter which one since they are almost stand-alones. I confess I didn't care for this one much. Anne Jocelyn, long presumed dead as her husband tried to rescue her from Breton during WWII, shows up suddenly. Her look-alike cousin was the one who died in the firefight, she says. Husband Philip refuses to believe that, but he has his own reasons to want his wife to stay dead. I didn't find any aspect of this plot surprising, and Wentworth has a habit of making Miss Silver cough before she says anything. That gets annoying fast when there's a lot of dialog. There are characters who are meant to be disliked, but I didn't like the others either. Philip seems like a stuffed shirt, and Philip's new love is a limp jellyfish. Oh well, they can't all be classics.

This story takes place around the end of the WWII. Another good mystery from Ms. Wentworth. It is a while before Ms. Silver makes an appearance. Be patient she will get into thick of things. My only problem was trying to keep up with who was Anne and who was Annie and their family tree. I had a feeling all through the story of what was going to happen next. However, I was completely surprised at the ending. I missed a major clue or maybe I would have figured it out. Good Luck!
