Another good read in Perry's "Thomas and Charlotte Pitt" mystery/thriller series. Perry really knows the Victorian era. Her characters speak and act as people from that time would have, not like modern people in fancy dress. While reading this book, I got so interested in the Callander Square families and the skeletons they had in their closets, I forgot to wonder who the murderer was.

An older book - Pitt and Charlotte are newly married and Charlotte is
expecting their first.
A great read though you'll never guess the murderer!

I was surprised to see Perry incorporate Secret Societies in her book. I believe she mentions the Hellfire Club in this book, I know she does in Pentecost Alley. Recently England excavated the basement of the home of their spy Benjamin Franklin and found the bones of several boys. Need we ask why they were there?

The bodies of two newborns are discovered buried in a garden in the posh Callander Square region of London. Inspector Pitt and his precocious young wife, Charlotte, begin solving the crime from two different perspectives--one from within the walls of the peculiar residents' homes, and the other from the outside. Davina Porter accompanies the listener into the fashionable, yet shallow, world of ladies and gentlemen, cads, self-centered girls, and dedicated servants shattered by the discovery of the babies. Her portrayal of Pitt and his wife is energizing and exhibits their intelligence and dedication to one another.

Another harowing and thrill packed novel... not all the animals died after the disaster at JUrrassic Park. There rumors that something has survived...

I enjoy these books because I like the time period and appreciate the detail involved in the lives of women, especially, at that time.

Anne Perry gives us another victorian mystery.
It was the worst of crimes, in the best of places.

This takes place in the late 1800's in England. It's very intersting to see how life was then.

Murders just didn't take place in fashionable Callander Square, so Inspector Pitt's well-bred wife Charlotte couldn't resist finding out why one had. Suddenly there she was, rattling the closets of the very rich, listening to backstair gossip, and unearthing truths that could push even the most proper aristocrat to murder....

Murders just didn't happen in fashionable areas like Callander Square -- but these two had. The police were totally baffled. But pretty young Charlotte Ellison Pitt was curious.

Inspector Pitt's well-bred wife didn't often meddle in her husband's business, but something about this case intrigued her -- intrigued her to the point that suddenly, staid Charlotte Pitt was rattling the closets of the very rich, hearing backstairs gossip that would shock a barmaid, and unearthing truths that could push even the most proper aristocrat to murder...

This story line lets us get a glimpse of Charlotte's detective abilities. It will help the reader to begin to understand how she will become an asset to Thomas as the series continues. This is a continuation of the character Charlotte will become. Enjoy read for the mystery fan.

A Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mystery set in Victorian England. They investigate a murder in a fashionable section of London. Anne Perry tells an excellent story in Victorian England. This book has been well used and is not in pristine shape. It is not dirty and torn, just rough around the edges.
