This series of stories introduces the young earl Cain C. Hargreaves, an eccentric loner millionaire who likes to solve mysteries and collect exotic poisons. This is the third volume of the Cain Saga stories, which has 5 volumes and then continues in the Godchild manga series.

Finally, Kaori Yuki has dedicated some time to her story. This volume departs a bit from her anthology storytelling style, and has only two stories instead of the 5-6 per volume that appeared in previous volumes. And taking the time to flesh out her stories has paid off - this is the best volume in the series so far. The main story mini-mystery is the most involving of all that we've had so far, and even though this volume doesn't reveal as much backstory as we've gotten before, we get a much better view of Cain's personality and motivations.

The second story is unrelated to the Cain Saga story, and is an intriguing bit of mystery with paranormal flare, but since it is such a brief piece, it suffers from Kaori Yuki's more typical, hurried style. Her tendency to abruptly rush the action panels becomes quite pronounced in these shorter stories, making them harder to understand and follow the plotline. Still, this was an interesting tidbit of an idea, almost like a pilot story for a new series.

I enjoyed this volume best of all the Cain Saga stories so far.
