I just recently discovered Burke. He moved immediately into my top 10 authors. His books are a combination of winning characters and settings, great plots, and a combination of violence and near poetry. This book was great!
To the people of New Iberia, Aaron Crown's ways are the stuff of 'poor white piney-woods folklore.' His family were shiftless timber people from north Louisiana who brought their ways into the Cajun wetlands: poaching deer, stealing livestock, trailing rumors of ties to the Ku Klux Klan. No one was surprised when Crown was accused of assassinating the most famous black civil rights lawyer in Louisiana. But it took twenty-eight years for the system to put him in Angola Penitentiary.

A Great Dave Robicheaux read. Dave, Cletus, Bootsie, Batist, Alafair, Helen and other SW louisiana characters get mixed up in gubernatorial politics, and the years-ago murder of an NAACP leader. Throw in a few really nasty folks, like Mingo Bloomberg, Mookie Zerrang and Dock Green and other coniving New Orleans low lifes and you've got another great novel by Burke. Good story to introduce the reader to the Robicheaux...who somehow manages with the help of his friends to stumble through and stay off the booze.
James Lee Burke is graphic and lyrical and this is Prime Burke. Dave Robichaux is in the line of fire as danger comes in swiftly from every direction, when all he wants to do is enjoy life on the bayou so lyrically described by Burke.
All the Dave Robicheaux books are great.
another real good book
Set in the Cajun country of Louisiana, this book tells the story of Aaron Crown, who was arrested for the decades old murder of her most famous black civil rights leader in the state. Dave Robicheaux sets out to prove that Crown has been made a scapegoat for years of collective guilt.

"Cadillac Jukebox" is terrific reading. In the same league with Elmore Leonard.

His task becomes mired in the history and inbred politics of New Iberia and thwarted by a ghoulish hit man who crawls out of the swamps to silence police informants. A wild story with enough oddball characters to make it interesting and worthwhile.
What can you say about Dave Robicheaux, he is a wonderful character and James Lee Burke never disapoints with any story about him. Try it you will like it and will want to continue with the series.
I love all of the Dave Robicheaux novels. This one digs deeply into Robicheaux's past, and that of Iberia parish, with the revival of interest in an old murder of a civil rights leader and the revival of an old flame's interest in Dave. A good read as a stand-alone novel; even better for long-time fans of James Lee Burke and Dave Robicheaux.
Dave Robicheaux makes for a interesting character.
I liked this Robicheaux story better than some of his other ones.

Classic Dave Robicheaux mystery starring the "usual suspects," Dave Robicheaux, Clete Purcell. Wonderful settings and moody background with fascinating characters and a great plot. Gripping, wonderfully well written mystery.
