Wow, this book has it all. Intrigue, adventure, and tragedy, along with a clear setting for understanding the fundamental environmental issues facing this country in the coming decades. Reisner is a terrific author, with quick gripping writing that is easy to read and hard to put down.

Anyone west of the Kansas/ Missouri border drawing a line up to the Dakota and south from this point is living on Borrowed time in over irrigated land. The groundwater in these areas is gone and the soil is becoming more saline and bit by bit unusable. I spent the first third of my life to the left of the 100th Meridian. There is plenty of water there. I have spent 2/3 of my life west of the 100th meridan.I came to the same conclusion long ago that there is too many people and not enough water as the author did. Only he was ahead of me.He wrote this book in 1980. I have said that no one should be allowed to move west and even if someone dies forget taking their place. I have spent most of my time living in California and utah and believe me both are running out of water. All Americans need to read this book.
I have posted another related Marc resigner book related to this one California is: "A Dangerous Place".

This is for all of you living in the area west of a straight line between Kansas and Missouri going straight up and down called the 100th Meridian. I was reading a Book that I highly recommend to you.It is called Cadillac Desert: The American West and It's Disappearing Water by Mark Reisner. I was reading this book and the areas west of the 100th Meridian are running very quickly out of water. I live in Utah, which is desert and we have the same problem as does California, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona, Wyoming and many other states. I thought that I would bring it to your attention. And all of you who live outside of this area I recommend this book too, because there is probably a plan to pipe or otherwise send your water to the western area of the United States.
