Not my favorite cozy in the world, probably won't read anymore by this author, some of the characters were just way to annoying!
Valued customer and old friend Thelma Chatwick is dead, and intrepid Denver dry cleaner Mandy Dyer is called upon to brush up her sleuthing skills and tidy up the investigation's loose ends. Why did Thelma insist on saving seemingly worthless garments-could her motives have something to do with the unusual buttons Thelma collected?
When Mandy decides to hire a private detective, the reluctant gumshoe turns out to be none other than a rough, handsome heartbreaker Mandy stood up in high school. He's still a good-looking guy, but he has since transformed himself into Mr. Clean. Romance is a distinct possibility; if, that is, the pair can outwit a murderer.
Mandy is also reunited in this adventure with her indispensable right-hand man, Mack Rivers; the all-too-dispensable Betty-the-bag-lady; and Nat, wonderboy reporter. Will they be able to help Mandy get the case all sewn up? Will the truth of Thelma's demise come out in the wash? Or will the witnesses button their lips and let Mandy get the starch knocked out of her?

Mandy Dyer owns a dry cleaning business, and she is surprised when one of her regular customers dies and leaves her a bag of old clothes. When she finds out that her friend died of a fall down the basement stairs, her suspicions are aroused as the old lady had told her she never went downstairs because she did not want to risk a fall. She discovers the old clothes to have a multitude of buttons sewn on to them, and suspects they may be valuable, so she starts investigating, hoping to find evidence to support her suspicion of murder and have the police investigate.
For a light cozy mystery, this was okay, though I have read better. The information about button collecting was interesting, but overall the book was rather bland, and the characters at times a little irritating. I may read more of this series if another book comes my way, but I would not go out of my way to find them. I rate this 2.75 stars, rounded up to 3.

This book in the Mandy Dyer series has the typical scenario of Mandy investigating where the police don't want her. Mandy has determined that her friend Thelma Chadwick's couldn't have been accidental and that the dresses covered with buttons Thelma left her must be covered with clues, if only she can figure them out. A new romantic interest for Mandy is introduced, who is part of Mandy's high school history.
My only real complaint is the character of Nat. As the books progress, he becomes more and more of an irritant with his jumping to conclusions, rudeness, and putting career above his friendship with Mandy. I felt these characteristics were extreme in this book, however, I find myself hooked on this series, so I will put that complaint to the side!
