I was not sure about reading this book since I am not into GreenPeace, save the whales, & hug a tree while you are at it, but this really was a gripping story and an eye-opener. Mendez's life story needs to be told. I don't think most of the world truly understands much less appreciates what the loss of the world's rainforests will do to the climate. The story centers on Mendez'a rise from a simple man collecting rubber from the forest, to a crusader against the large ranches and the massive clear cutting that is taking place in the name of progress. Mendez pays the ultimate price in his struggle against what he sees as injustices both in the big business ranches and the government that supports them. Alot of historical background is provided, as well as facts about the wonders of the rainforest. It is well worth the read.
