This book is described as a "witty and entertaining satire." Edmund Crispin's books are often funny, but the above description is, if anything, an understatement. At the sane time it is not a "laugh out loud" satire, although it is a thoroughly enjoyable one. I've read an endless number of mysteries, but I simply can't remember reading one where the murderer turns out to have the profession this one has.
In this book, while investigating a murder, Professor Fen is also running for a seat in Parliament in a small, rural constituency. His final speech before the polls open is a classic. And never have I ever heard of a "politician" advising voters to do what he suggests. I could only wish every American voter would do the same when next we vote in November, 2024. It would solve so many problems.
I wish I could post this one for others to read, but it has some water damage. One thing about the book which brings back fond memories of the past is, since it was published in 1980, the cost of the book on the cover is listed as only $1.95. And I still have a lot of paperbacks from the '60s which list prices of twenty-five and forty-five cents.
