This was Turow's first book. It is an exciting mystery, crime drama, courtroom book. The ending is such a surpise, that when I finished I wanted to read the book all over again to seek out the clues.

Turow is really one of the best mystery writers I've read. This story has an entirely different tone than Presumed Innocent, even though the main character is the same (Sandy Stern). It deals with financial malfeasance, and it can be a little hard to follow, but it's well worth it.

If you like Grisham, you'll probably like Turow. It's easily-consumed drama from the legal world. Seemed like this was gonna be a big trend in the nineties and, well, I guess it was in a way.

Sandy Stern has to cope with losing his wife who has commited suicide. How does a middle aged man make it through this tragedy? How does a reserved, formal lawyer re-enter the world as a single man? How does he manage to represent his adventuresome, risk taking brother-in-law. These are some of the challenges he faces.

Great read.

Scott Turow is an outstanding writer. He mixed the legal aspects with personal relationships giving the novel a good balance not always found in legal thrillers. If you liked "Presumed Innocent", you will love "The Burden Of Proof".

Totally different view of Sandy Stern compared to Presumed Innocent - kind of neat that the author can change perspective.

I skipped the lovey-dovey part, and went straight to the juicy financial malfaesance parts, which are Scott Turow's strong suit, anyway.

As a retired lawyer, I enjoyed reading this book. The plot twists kept it entertaining.

If you are looking for a good legal thriller with a lot of court room drama, this is not your book. If you paragraph after paragraph that delves into family relationships and psychoanalysis, then yor will probably enjoy this book

Another well-written mystery by the author of "Presumed Innocent". Those who read that book will recognize the protagonist of this one as the brilliant, elegant, and elusive lawyer who mastermined the defense of Rusty Sabich. The novel probes the character and private life of this complex man as he attempts to understand his wife's suicide while representing his rich but shady brother-in-law.
