Building a Fish Rack Investigations into Proofs Properties Perimeter and Area - Math in A Cultural Context: Lessons Learned from Yup'ik Eskimo Elders Author:Barbara L. Adams, Jerry Lipka Math in a Cultural Context: Lessons Learned from Yup'ik Eskimo Elders is the result of a long-term collaboration. These supplemental math modules for grades 1-6 bridge the unique knowledge of Yup'ik Elders with school-based mathematics. This series challenges students to communicate and think mathematically as they solve problems. Problems and i... more »nquiry-oriented, and the problems are constructed so that the possibilities are constrained and the students can understand mathematical relationships, properties of geometrical shapes, develop place value understanding, state conjuctures, and provide proofs. The curriculum taps into students' creative, practical, and analytical thinking. Our classroom-based research strongly suggests that students engaged in this curriculum can develop deeper mathematical understandings than students who engage with more procedure-oriented paper and pencil curriculum. Building a Fish Rack: Investigation into Proofs, Properties, Perimeter, and Area is targeted for Grade 6 Curriculum.« less
