Because these comics were collected and reprinted in the order in which the stories take place in-verse rather than chronological publishing order, the comics in volume 3 were actually the first ones to be published when they started doing the book. Its obvious theyre still working out the kinks. Theres some struggling to find character voices, the art is kind of wonky in a lot of places (although Chris Bachalo did one of the covers and it is fantastic). Theres also a lot of little details that drove me nuts, like calling the town Sunnyvale repeatedly. At first I thought it might be some bizarre right issue (although I dont know why they would be allowed to use the rest of the shows characters and terminology but not the correct name of the town), but when they called it both Sunnyvale and Sunnydale in the same comic, I knew it was just the editor dropping the ball.
Its a shaky start, but I know the comics get much better later, so stick with it. I have to say, though, that Hector Gomez's pencils were just awful. His art looks weirdly 80s-like (especially in the faces) and doesnt really look like the characters.
