We love the My America books. My children read this for a study on the Civil War.

This book was something that I didnt feel attached to the characters as I do the ones I do in the Dear America series.
To me the character Virginia never really changed throughout the story. Maybe that is why the story is more then one part. She seems to try and change but instead just whines through the book.
The way it was written did not seem to connect to me as a reader. Yes the little girl is writing to amuse herself as her brother taught her but it should be a flowing story as well. I just do not feel that it did flow freely as it should.
In the end I just felt it was a generic version of the Dear America series.

Ginny is a 9 year old girl in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania prior to the big 1863 Civil War battle.Her adult brother and Dad went to help her Uncle and leave her with the preacher's wife, sister-and his three small kids. Ginny writes in her brother's diary and she sees horrible events transpire during and after the battle. HER dad comes back but she and add look for brother who is in a war hospital. She gets to hear Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address and she moves with her family and gains a new family member.It is a great story.
