Peace had broken out all over the planet. Which made it tough to be a mercenary captain. If his enemies would just leave him alone, Miles Naismith decided bitterly, the Dendarii Free Mercenary Fleet would collapse all on its own. But Miles's enemies plot a more deadly fall. For some unexplained reason the Dendarii payroll is missing and the orders from the Barrayaran Imperial Command are being delayed by Miles's superior, Captain Galeni. What connects the impeccable, insufferable Captain Galeni and the Komarran rebel expatriates on Earth anyway? But the most deadly question of all before Miles is more personal: are Mile's two identities, Admiral Naismith of the Dendarii and Lieutenant Lord Vorkosigan of Barrayar, splitting apart along the lines of his divided loyalties? And who is trying to assassinate which version of Him?

A Miles Vorkosigan adventure.
A Miles Vorkosigan adventure.
I am a fan of the Vorkosigan series and this was another satisfying read.
Certainly not my favorite in this series. Too much Miles-up-against-a-wall and too little of the madcap scheming and politicking that I enjoy most about Vorkosigan, but still a great story.
Miles, as mercenary Admiral Naismith, puts into port for a quiet resupply and re-equip, which rapidly turns into intrigue, kidnapping, family surprises and, well, just another great ride.
Good to see how the brothers met, was hoping for a bit more emphasis on the important dramatic moments.
Lois McMaster Bujold has written her fourth straight superb novel....Read, or you will be missing something extraordinary.
Space Opera at its Finest. Man can Lois McMaster Bujold write and Miles is the perfect hero.

One of my favorites in the Vorkosigan series, though I've enjoyed them all. Was I biased because this one was set in London? Maybe. However, this story also didn't have as many convoluted political elements (unfamiliar names of made-up political offices and intra/inter-planetary cultural conflicts) that, frankly, I'm often just too lazy to completely follow in the other books.
