A wonderful resource for people who either suffer from manic-depression or know someone who does. This book clarifies many questions about this illness.
Patti goes crazy! An interesting background for the Patti Duke persona, and how she managed to craft a life around the dual insanity of fame and Hollywood. Very helpful for those with a manic in the family.

Patty (Ann) Duke was one of the first celebrities to share her story with the world. She shares her volatile public life while struggling to maintain her mental and emotional balance. She relives the long road to understanding and recovery from a life controlled by Bipolar Disorder (manic depression). Her relief at finding the cause of the problems and finding out there was help available is an emotional journey many of us can relate to on our own bipolar lives. I loved her candid details of the shame she felt at times. I'm so thankful to have not been dealing with my own illness in the public eye. She has always been such a mentor for me. Very inspiring. This book is also a very good source for family members to understand the complexities of living with this disorder, and if they are an age to remember her career as an actress, it may touch them in a way we can't explain ourselves.

If you have been diagnosed with bipolar illness, as I have, or know someone who has, this book is a first-hand descriptor of what the experience is like. I admire Patty Duke (aka Anna) for coming forth with her story and sharing it so openly. Very readable and accessible. The anecdotes added by Gloria Hochman, a medical reporter, widen the story and make it even more useful to individuals who want to understand the breadth of this disorder.
