Book Description:
You can't think about falling.

The words are her father's, from the time he was building bridges. But for two years now there's been no job in Pittsburgh for an inronworker, and hardly any words for Hallie from the kindly man she has called Dadddy. He's become a shadow in his own house.

And Hallie thinks about falling.

It's April of seventh grade. If she didn't have her best friend, Jude, and a new friend, Crane Henderson (she can barely believe it: he's in NINTH GRADE and stops by to bring her presenets like a robn's nest with a feather-light egg inside!), Hallie would have no one to entrust wih her feelings. Her older sister, Shelley, is away at college; her mom is away at work, or, when she's home, seems not to hear.

So Hallie thinks about falling...

One cold Saturday, she stands with Crane at the site of her father's last work, a "silent steel sculputre like a sentence half-spoken, dangling in midair," called by everyone the Bridge to Nowhere.

And then she looks up.
