This is sort of the "prequel" to The Wedding. Its the story of Alec and Jamie. Not as good as the Wedding in my opinion (which is one of my favorites), but charming nonetheless.

This is Garwood's best book in my opinion. Alec is a callous and hard Scotsman who has to learn how to love and cherish the fiesty and ever-surprising Jamie. Jamie is funny, tender, sensitive and she always manages to surprise you and Alec. She has to overcome her new clanspeople hostility towards their new English Mistress. She has to deal with a secret enemy who wishes to kill her. She has to deal with a man who was rumored to have killed his wife and she has to deal with her grwoing love for this man.
The book will see you laughing out loud through many pages. The characters are so well-written, that you seem to know them for real by the end.

I have to be the wet blanket. I'm in the minority here because I thought this book was merely average, not great as others have said. The heroine is childish. I don't know how many times she asked him "Are you mad at me?" After about the tenth time, you start rolling your eyes. She's also got to be one of the densest heroines. She can't even tell when the man is teasing her. She goes to one extreme or another. She'll either openly defy him or she'll try so hard to please him. There really wasn't any middle ground. I wonder if the writing seems off because this book is well over twenty years old, and the romance genre has changed since then. The character development for both of them was lacking. What did they both enjoy doing? What were their childhoods like? What was the heroine's relationship like with her now deceased mother? What about his relationship with his former wife who passed away under suspicious circumstances? What does he like about his responsibility as a laird? How much time has he spent in England?
Everything about the heroine was so convenient to her eventual future in Scotland. She knew how to speak Gaelic, hunt, ride bareback, etc.
The subplot about a killer in the castle could have been done away with without affecting the story. It was a silly plot and the reader can figure out quite easily who the murderer is.

This is the first Garwood book I read and the reason I fell in love with her writing. Unlike many historical writers, her women characters have strength and gumption. They're saving their men as much as their men save them. More specifically to this book, the chemistry between Alec and Jamie had me laughing and smiling all the way through the book. I loved Jamie's stubbornness and strength.

I love older Garland books-this was wonderful. She writes different periods and I always enjoy whenever she places her stories. This was not one of my favorite time periods but it wasnt an issue because the story was so well written. Classic.

What a wonderful surprise! I read this book as a teenager, borrowed it from a friend, and thoroughly enjoyed it. My romantic teenage mind considered a perfect romance novel. I've often thought of the story in the last 13 years but couldn't remember the title or the author. Was browsing PaperBackSwap and came across "The Bride", thought it seemed interesting and quickly requested it. I received a wonderful shock as I began reading the novel and recognized it as the lost book from my teenage memory. "The Bride" is still entertaining and holds many of the attributes I enjoy in a good historical novel; set in Ireland, handsome Irish laird, clever and talented heroine who gets into trouble but isn't stupid. This is a fun book and I'm going to request Julie Garwood's other books ASAP.

I love Julie Garwood. Every book has action, adventure, mystery, romance and of course some humor. In this book Scottish laird Alec Kincain must take an English bride by order of the king and he selects Jamie, youngest daughter of Baron Jamison. He dosent know what he's in for by picking her but soon finds out. An wonderful story with great, memorable characters. I bet you will have trouble putting it down once you start reading it.
Jamie will steal your heart just like she stole Alec's. This story kept me smiling.
A nicely-paced romance with plenty of steamy scenes and a convincing love story. Both H&h were likable and I thought their story was sweet. It wasn't great, but good, and certainly made me interested to read other books by this author.
I thought a lot of the dialogue, perhaps even the situations, seemed unlikely for the 1100's - not that I'm any expert, but you recognize contemporary speech when you read it.
The overarching "mystery" in the story was a little thin, and I thought the tension between h&h seemed a bit contrived after a point. However I enjoyed the constant interplay and battles between Scottish clans and the things that Jamie did to unwittingly incite problems. It was fun and only once did it induce eye-rolling.

I read this in high school the first time and just got it again. Still a funny and romantic tale!
One of my favorite books EVER! I couldn't put it down. It was such a great story and I loved the dialog and connections between the characters. Alec was a big time Alpha who wanted to tame her and she was an independent women that did what she wanted. She made everybody love her even though she was English and his clan wanted to hate her- even Alec. The relationship was like an I Love Lucy episode just laugh out loud funny- okay I am not that old, but I have seen many reruns. I have reread it many times!
I'm new to Garwood and I'm quite impressed. It was fun and had a few laugh-out-loud moments. The characters were extremely engaging. Great read. Will look for more by her.
I can not get enough of Julie Garwoods books. Ms. Garwood is a new author for me, but I have already read 5 of her books and loved everyone of them. The women are strong and so in control and understanding and take charge of these fierce warriors, who fall madly and tenderly in love with them. I go back to my history books and do a little research for the fun of it. Love the happy endings!

This book was an excellent read. It had all the elements of a great historical romance. It made me laugh. Jaimie was amazing and endearing as she both baffled and entranced her scottish laird. I read a Julie Garwood book that I had purchased years ago and was at once engrossed in the story. So looked for more of her books on paperback swap. I loved 'The Bride' and look forward to reading more of her books.

I love Julie Garwood's historical romances. They are fast-paced, funny, and so hard to put down. Her characters are great from her quirky heroines to her handsome gentle heroes. I read this book years ago and this time listened to the audiobook. The narrator, Rosalyn Landor, does a fantastic job with this story. My rating: 5 Stars.

I really enjoyed this book. I read "The Wedding" first, so I was really looking forward to "The Bride" to read about Alec and Jamie. This is one of my favorites.

LOVE LOVE IT. Made me smile and laugh. Just cant get enough of the Scotish romance books.
I really enjoyed this book. You will laugh like crazy. The relationship between Alec and Jamie has respect and you fall in love with them, while they fall in love, which few books have, and boy did they have chemistry together. I really liked that they had the conflict of their countries and languages, It added a lot and made me again laugh. I will have to say, I am a huge Judith McNaught fan, and these scenes were not as descriptive as her books, but still great story and a great read! In the book, Alec calls Jamie "wife" and she gets irritated and starts calling him "husband", you smile through the entire book!

Julie Garwood does not disappoint the reader in any of her books. Rich details make you want to find a Scotsman for yourself. This is one of my re-read books that I keep on hand. You will want to read them all. Love how she has the same characters in the books.
