Contains definitions and explanations of many famous phrases, allusions and figures, whether historical or mythical.
Originally published in 1870. In addition there are notes on important historical figures and events, and other things of interest.
I love finding out what the background and definition of many words and phrases I have heard for years and new ones that I haven't heard. Very interesting and informative. I found it a goldmine of hard to find information. Extensive cross referencing eliminates repetition. If you like words and sayings this is a fun book to browse and read.
The editor has included some various new oddities.
