Known for his stories about the English countryside, H.E. Bates published the humourous "A Breath of French Air" in 1959. In it, the irrepressible, unworldly-but-wise Larkin family venture out of Kent for a first-ever vacation on the coast of France. Very funny in the best of British traditions. If you like British humor a la PBS, you'll like this book.

From the front cover: "Thirsty, hungry, lusty, happy,irrepressible--the immortal Larkins".

From the back cover: "They're here again--the indestructible Larkins of The Darling Buds of May. this time, wtih Baby Oscar, the Rolls and ma's unmarried passport, they're off to France. With Pop at the wheel, there's not much French without gin to match and with H.E. Bates you may be sure, there's no French without tears of laughter. You'll find them back on the gravy train in the Kentish countryside in When the Green Woods Laugh and Oh! To Be in England."
