Having studied linguistics, albeit for languages in a different part of the world, I had always been intrigued by those Mayan glyphs and found it strange that they were thought only to be about huge numbers and time counts. Now their brilliant decipherers have shown that the glyphs have much more in common with other writing systems than we supposed. I will not say any more, so as not to spoil other readers' delight of discovery.
