This is my first steampunk novel, and it is outside my comfort zone. However, I like Nancy Campbell Allen, so I decided to try it. Emmeline O'Shea is a force of nature. She has a voice for the shapeshifters that are maligned in society. She is to give an important speech at the International Shifter Rights Organization in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Emmeline's life is in danger, and the responsibility of protecting her falls on Detective Inspector Oliver Reed. Their relationship is far from simple, marked by a history of conflict
due to Emme's rebellious nature and tendency to challenge legal activism's boundaries.

This story was redundant. The author constantly restated the relationship between Oliver and Emme instead of moving the story along. The middle two hours of the tale could have been omitted (this is an eight-hour story that could have been cut off two hours without harming the plot).

This story suffered from overwrought feelings and overwrought drama (at times). I didn't have a problem with vampires and shapeshifters, but I had a problem with padded dialogue and a slow-moving plot.
