This book was referred to me by a co-worker, she ready it YEARS ago and loved it. I just couldn't get into it and it is one of ONLY TWO books in my entire life, i put down and refuse to finish. The characters irritated me.

I am one of those who read this book YEARS ago, quite a few times. Loved it, the characters, the stories of the lives they lived. Lent it to someone with the same taste in books and she struggled to finish it. A different generation, different taste. Give it a chance, you can always quit it.
