Wow- This novel really touched my soul. A teacher receives a gift from a former student who she had taught over 25 years ago. In it she discovers 12 diaries from the student. The student had passed away. In these diaries, she learns who he was, how he struggled and the role she played in his life. Excellent

A teacher learns from her student through his diaries --- Vincent left Elizabeth his diaries when he died of AIDS, 10 years after they'd last spoken. She leaves his legacy in this book.
This book was touching and heartbreaking at the same time.

Author's former student from her days teaching high school in Brooklyn kept in touch for several years only by Christmas card exchanges, until the fellow's diaries arrived at her doorstep unexpectedly as part of his estate. Rather than a strict "re-creation" of Vincent's life, Stone went with contrasting diary entries against what she knew of him personally, as well as discussing how she dealt with issues similar to his in her own life. Highly recommended.

I did not like the extensive detail in which the student expresses his love life. Not for the squeamish. Couldn't get through the end of the book.
