Growing up in North Carolina, my third grade teacher read this series to us and for the next couple of years our favorite game to play was Boxcar Children. Fast forward twenty-five years, and I'm 34 and now living in Connecticut... five miles away from the home of Gertrude Chandler Warner. There's even a Boxcar Children museum. I visit her grave every so often, just to pay tribute to the lovely lady who played such a vital role in my love for great literature.

an old-fashioned tale of four orphans who set out to make it on their own. Reading level 3, and a great read aloud for 6 and 7 year olds.

One warm night four children stood in front of a bakery. No one knew them. No one knew where they came from.
Four orphan children set out to find a safe place to live and discover an old red boxcar that shelters them from a storm.

My son (age 9) had to read this for summer reading. He is a "reluctant reader", but really enjoyed this story.
We will be getting more of this series in the future.

Love this book! Great book about 4 orphans who want to stay together and their fun adventures together. They are so sweet and really look out for each other! A book that you can let your kids read without worrying that they pick up any bad character flaws from it. My 6 year old wanted to read it again, as soon as we were done with it.

Delightful and wonderful. I am a teacher and read it to my kids in class and they LOVED it and want me to find the rest of the set and continue the stories.
Years later, I still love this book. My 2nd grade teacher read it to us when I was eight. I am reading it with my kids.
I still dream of living in a boxcar, making my own refrigerator in the cool area behind a waterfall and having a dog named watch. I still want to win a "free-for-all" race and live in a kind world with Dr. Moore who helps a sick child right in his own home.
This book will give your 6-8 year old kind daydreams and perhaps imagination and innovation (building a pool!). Warner makes these books poignant by making the kids self-sufficient stars!
I highly recommend this classic!

This is a great story for children! My children enjoyed it very much. It's about 4 children who parents die and they have to fend for themselves. It was very creative and well written!
