From back cover of book...
I clung to the rails, inhaling great gulps of salty air, my stomach making an uneasy flip with each slap of wave. It was mid-April. In Philidelphia the first colorful buds would be pushing up their heads, but here at sea, gray gloomy skies marked the horizon. I pulled my cape tightly against the icy wind, remembering Miss Hepplewhite's Helpful Hints on Travel.
"Remember Jane, a good taveler need only know three things. One, always keep your composure. Two, dress plainly and pack lightly. Three, do not let little irritations sway your cheery nature," Miss Hepplewhite had said, patting my shoulder.
She had, in my opinion, been a bit remiss in not mentioning any hints on killing fleas, avoiding rats, bathing with seawater, or being seasick.

Amazing! It gives a taste of what it was like for a girl to live in the 1800's. Good for girls ages 10-11+ Its about a girl named Jane, who lives in Pennsylvania with her father (a doctor) she grows up to be a very nice young lady, and then she boards a ship spends a long while on it going to the frontier, then she survives there for about 6 months, while being plagued with bad luck the whole time. She messes up almost every chapter, but in the end, end's up a courageous, witty and semi-self controlled young lady. I highly suggest this book!! If you have any questions on it you can PM me! :)

This is a young adult book which I read as an adult. I found it pretty predictable but still very satisfying. Jane is a likable character and I enjoyed spending time with her. I would have really loved this book at age 13 or so! Probably would have seemed a lot less predictable if I was that age - I've had a good 30 years of active reading since I was the age this book was intended for. Recommended.
