However, the quilt is usually made as a scrap quilt. Solid color squares separated the white borders from the patchwork, which was usually an assortment of prints randomly places.
We have update the design of the quilt and the method of its construction. We applies the same ideas and techniques that we developed and presented in our book Trip Around the World Quilts. This method makes use of purchased fabrics (not scraps) a multiple template for cutting rows of squares instead of individual squares, and repeated fabric arrangements. We have translated this "scrap" quilt into a stately, formal design that now closer identifies with the city of its name.
To form and interesting design utilizing several fabrics, we have used very small squares in these quilts. We try to keep the size of the square in proportion to the size of the quilt. They range from 1 1/4 inch for the wall quilt to 2 inch square for the king-size quilt. Most sizes use squares that measure 1 3/4 inches. These quilts require patience and a great deal of sewing! This book offers an efficient way to cut and sew these quilts but they should not be considered fast and easy.
