Modern New York doesn't have a soul. Anyway, pretty sympathetic book. It seems that he was the corrupt boss less than 10 years, he got his cummuppance (he died in jail), and the author explains why he got to be the boss (during the Civil War, and not by anything connected to the battlefield).
