3rd in the series. We learn more about characters' backgrounds, including info that makes some characters less unlikeable. Relationships start/change/end. Freegan characters present their arguments for the freegan lifestyle, but the sleuth remains unconvinced. The mystery features a missing diary that is discovered in stages. The diary's secret is not what I expected. -- Not shocking, but not the standard cliche secret. Decent resolution to the mystery strengthens some relationships and destroys others. Author gives the characters depth and interest. Charming book, interesting characters, good mystery with good resolution.

First Line: "Get out of my house!"

Former college roommate Pammy Fredericks has overstayed her welcome in more ways than one. After Tricia discovers that Pammy has stolen one of her checks, forged her signature, and cashed it, Tricia throws her out of the house. That very same day, Pammy is found dead in a trash container behind the café owned by Tricia's sister.

Tricia learns that Pammy had found a diary and was trying to blackmail someone. When she starts getting threatening phone calls linked to Pammy, Tricia decides to do her own investigating. Even though the county sheriff has given the case to a handsome captain, Tricia wants to learn the facts firsthand-- while she's also running her bookstore, helping to plan a wedding, and dealing with her annoying sister.

When I read that the latest Booktown mystery, Chapter & Hearse, had been published, I knew I had to get this book off my TBR shelves and get it read. I enjoy this series, and I don't want to get too far behind in reading it.

The mystery kept me guessing, and I enjoyed the camaraderie of Tricia with her employees and other friends in town. What absolutely tickled me six shades of pink was the non-appearance of Sheriff Wendy Adams. There are certain types of characters that annoy the pudding out of me: the meddling mother who disapproves of her daughter's choice of career and won't rest until said daughter is married, pregnant, and chained to a stove (preferably six-burner and stainless steel); the obnoxious sibling who takes the main character for granted and signs her up for all sorts of things she doesn't want to do; and the law enforcement official who takes an unreasoning dislike to someone and spends all his/her energy trying to pin the crime on the hated person.

Sheriff Wendy was a prime example of the third type of annoying character I listed, and I was sick of her trying to pin everything from crab grass to murder on Tricia. Having a new (and handsome) captain taking over crime solving and also providing a romantic interest is a definite plus.

Unfortunately, there also happens to be an obnoxious sibling in residence. Her name is Angelica, and no matter how wonderfully she cooks, I'd love to ride the woman out of town on a rail. She's constantly taking on work she knows she can't do because she fully expects her sister, Tricia, to do it for her. I suppose all this means that I'm also annoyed at Tricia for being so spineless.

Grow a backbone, Tricia! Learn how to say NO! I'm only saying this because I like you and your investigations so much. There is hope for you, and I'll keep reading and hoping you'll see the light. It is possible to be nice and be able to stand up for yourself, you know! (Oh oh. Please don't tell anyone that I just yelled at a fictional character....)

I'm normally pretty good at figuring these type of books out and while I did have most of it, there was still a surprise. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.

Bookplate Special by Lorna Barrett
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In the third book in the Booktown Mystery Series, Angelica has opened a diner in addition to her bookstore, the Cookery. Tricia's friend from college is in town, out-staying her welcome, and the local food panty is moving into a new home, only Tricia never knew the town even had a food pantry.

This was well-written, as Tricia realizes that she has no idea what is going on in her new town, that she spends so much time in the bookstore, she had no idea there was a food pantry, or anything, and she finds herself exploring this world of other people in order to find out what happened to her college roommate, who is found dead behind the diner.

Sheriff Wendy Adams is missing in this book, in fact she never appears to investigate the murder, she sends a new police officer, and finally Tricia feels that maybe the sheriff's department might be capable of handling this investigation on their own. But then again, she ends up getting drawn into the investigation, not out of fear that the new guy won't do his job, but just the past experiences won't let her relax and let it go, she has to figure it out.

This was another great book. I loved getting to know more about Stoneham and the people there and the history and events of the town. It was a lot of fun, I really enjoy these books!

The third book in the Booktown Mysteries. Each Booktown Mystery can stand alone as a good story, but read as the series makes you crave the next book.

This is a cozy mystery that warms the heart with it characters, story plot and added receipes. Lorna Barrett, a new author to me, has a smooth writing style, incorporates past books and likable characters into her stories, and maintains enough twists and turns in each story to keep you reading and wanting more. I highly recommend this author if you like cozy mysteries.

Very good, great twists and turns, for me unexpected ending. Characters as usual very good, developing nicely. Each book has a different concept, with a different base for the story. This one had to do with a food pantry and hunger in our country. Each one is based on something differnt. Good stories.

Book #3 in the Booktown Mystery series. I have enjoyed this series of books so far. The characters are fun and entertaining. And not everyone is perfect or all bad, so that is nice too. And you get a few recipes at the end of the book also as a bonus

Love this book....I just started this series recently and have not been able to put them down.....it's a good cozy, with lots of action...good to start from the first book, but each has its own story, so not necessary...Starting from the beginning allows you to get a sense of the main characters and their relationships.

Tricia's sister has opened a new eatery in addition to her Cookery store. Love is on tap for one of Tricia's employees. Halloween is quickly approaching and there are strange happenings around town. Tricia's former college roommate has been staying with her on an "extended" overnight visit, until she is asked to leave. When she is found dead in a dumpster, suspects abound. great next installment in this cozy series.

One of my favorite cozy mystery series. Well written and an enjoyable read. Sit down, enjoy a bit of New Hampshire and try to guess who the killer is.
