A collection of stories, fables, fiction, drama by well-known authors (like Aesop, Dickens, Tolstoy, Shakespeare) about how to live. Sections on self-discipline, compassion, responsibility, friendship, work, courage, perserverence, honesty, loyalty, faith. 818 pp. This is not a book you'll read cover to cover, but any particular piece you read will reward you--and your children--well. Bennett collected these specifically to help children understand and develop character and my husband and I enjoyed reading these with our sons.

There are lots of stories and poems that I'd love to read aloud to my 2nd grade classes, but I don't know how many I will be able to read with a straight face. EXAMPLE:
John was a bad boy, and beat a poor cat
Tom put a stone in a blind man's hat,
James was the boy who neglected his prayers,
They've all grown up ugly, and nobody cares.
Unless we had a discussion about the nature of beauty and ugliness first, this may be teaching them something else other than virtue.

The principled former secretary of education has culled a selection of poems and stories to be read aloud in hopes of passing on specific virtues to the younger generation. The selected works appear under chapter titles such as "Compassion"; "Responsibility"; "Friendship"; "Courage"; "Perseverance"; and "Faith." As artificial or perhaps self-righteous as this project may seem, it is effective. The old stories from the Bible, from great authors, and from folklore do exert a charm and send a message that will stir families to discuss or contemplate the issues set forth. It truly is a treasury, with some tales so brief they can be read at the dinner table. Perfect bedtime, anytime family reading.
One of my favorite children I know asked for this book. They just enjoyed the stories so much. This book has a little bit of everything from history to fairy tales. This is a rather thick book so the stories will last a long time.

This is a great book about the character qualities of famous people. It is an easy read for you and it is also great to use to teach your children about great people and their character.

A massive book at over 800 pages! Lots of good stuff. The cover jacket has some slight water damage, but otherwise it's in perfect shape.
