The beginning of The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison is atmospheric and sets up the anticipation for what is to come. The rest of the book unfortunately fails to deliver. This post-apocalyptic story is a dark and sometimes graphically violent one. With an unlikable main character and a plot that does not build to a conclusion, this is not the book for me.

I loved this book. It was raw, violent and depressing but at the same time it was hopeful, reassuring and fascinating. People are dying of fever and the majority of them are women and children. The women who have survived are preyed upon or even worshipped. The one failing thing is that women who get pregnant don't always survive and their babies never do. In a brutal world where hope seems to dissolve, we follow one lady, the midwife, who goes through many trials and tribulations. At times seeing the worst of people but also getting many glimpses of their best.
Magnificent writing. Had me from the very beginning. Can't wait to read the 2nd book!
