Another amazing and heartwrenching tale of the Holocaust. Eva gets thown into the inner workings of the resistance by becoming a forger of documents. They are mostling smuggling children into Switzerland, but also soldiers and others. There are many famlies hiding Jewish children, and they work to get them out of the country.Eva,a talented artist works with Remy in the back of a church headed by a kindly priest, forging baptism records and birth certificates, and offical papers from other countries. It is important to her to record the children's names into an old religious book in code, before they are given new identities and may never remember who they are. Many times I was on the edge of my seat. It's a story of present day and the 1940's. but it doesn't keep jumping back and forth, so it's easy to follow.

The most meaningful aspect of WWII stories is learning about ordinary people who summon strength and courage they didn't know they had to save themselves and others against incredible odds, a theme that is central to this novel.
I believe the coded book central to this novel is based on true events; an author's note would have been very helpful. Also, there was one character that was consistently annoying and at least one aspect of the novel that didn't seem true to my limited knowledge of the Jewish faith. All of this, plus a heavy emphasis on romance, limited my enjoyment of this title.
I listened to the audiobook and appreciated Madeleine Maby's narration. I'm not sure I would have finished reading a print book.

This book is fantastic, one of the best I've read in a while. I loved all the characters, the storyline was intriguing and fast-paced, and even the ending was great. Danger and rescues, betrayal, romance, Nazis - what's not to love?
I read this book in 2 days even though I am a slow reader.
Gripping and well written. Many parallels to life today.
On the left with suppression and oppression.
If it had only been possible to this kind of thing being
once in a lifetime. Alas, History does repeat itself when
society choses to forget.
By all means read it and pass it along for others.
