"Bones in Her Pocket" is a novella by Kathy Reichs, featuring her favorite protagonist Temperance Brennan. The entire tale fits onto 2 CDs (audio) or 64 pages (printed / electronic), BUT it contains most of the things that readers of Ms. Reichs full-sized novels enjoy. The discovery of an unidentified corpse (or more likely, just a skeleton). Interaction with the local police department, in this case Charlotte / Mecklenburg, North Carolina. An unusual discovery while reviewing the bones in the laboratory / morgue. AND, the realization that Dr. Brennan has placed herself in a hazardous situation by investigating alone on site, rather than waiting for the appropriate police to handle or assist with the situation. It even concludes with the traditional look into the "Case Files of Dr. Temperance Brennan".

There's not a lot of space in this book to get into Dr. Brennan's personal life (although it is touched upon), let alone advance it. AND, there are lot fewer nodes and stops along the pathway of plot from discovery to resolution since this tale is less than 20% of the size of her regular novels, that shouldn't be a surprise. Rather, the amount of familiar items that DO make their way into the tale was more surprising!

It's worth the look-see for fans of Kathy Reichs, and might even provide a nice peek into the series for non-regular readers.

RATING: 4 1/2 stars, rounded down to 4 stars.
