Not as compelling as other books Ms. Gerritsen has written, this gruesome story nonetheless moves fast and draws you in with revelation after stunning revelation. Eerie in parts, downright scary in others. Definitely a page-turner.

Another excellent thriller from Tess Gerritsen! She's quickly become one of my faves! Body Double picks up where The Sinner leaves off, bringing back her cast of fabulously human characters. Tightly plotted, very smartly written, sometimes brutal, often funny ... most recommended!

Pregnant women play key roles in this bone-chilling fourth novel in Gerritsen's edgy, suspenseful series of thrillers featuring Boston Medical Examiner Maura Isles and Homicide Detective Jane Rizzoli. Both of the usually gritty crime fighters are uncharacteristically vulnerable. Rizzoli is carrying her first child, and Islesdivorced and alone at age 40 and suddenly, unsettlingly aware of her biological clockis experiencing decidedly unspiritual feelings for her priest. As the novel begins, Islesan adopted child who never knew the identity of her birth parentsis confronted by the corpse of a murdered woman who is apparently her identical twin. Another detective, Rick Ballard, comes forward to say that he knew the victim and is certain her killer is a powerful pharmaceutical baron known to have stalked her. Isles falls for the handsome Ballard, but she isn't convinced by his theory, and she launches an investigation into her sister's past, following the trail to a state correctional facility and a schizophrenic inmate who may be her mother. This opens the cobwebbed pages of a nightmarish family album and leads Isles to a remote cabin in Maine where the long-dead body of a pregnant woman is discovered buried in the woods. The killer, Isles discovers, has been murdering pregnant women for decades, making periodic sweeps of the country. Meanwhile, brief scenes chronicle the diabolical kidnapping of an affluent pregnant housewife who is kept buried in a crude coffin. An electric series of startling twists, the revelation of ghoulishly practical motives and a nail-biting finale make this Gerritsen's best to date.

This was a very accurate book from a medical standpoint. Before reading her bio I knew she had to have had prior medical training. Some readers may get a little bogged down, but many will just pick up a thing or two....interesting tidbit here and there.
Plot thought out, and I didn't feel it was a dry read. I feel it's helpful when feedback includes this::

According to her website the order for Rizzoli/Isles is:

The Surgeon
The Apprentice
The Sinner
Body Double
Vanish
Mephisto Club

Tess Gerritsen was an internist before she became a bestselling author. That's where she got her medical knowledge and makes her fiction so realistic. She lives about 15 miles from me in Maine. And Stephen King lives about 30 miles away. What is it up here, the water?!

A woman is found shot to death outside Boston Medical Examiner Maura Isles' home. Everyone is shocked when they see she is a dead ringer for Dr. Isles. Even more shocking is the fact that they share the same blood type and birth date. Maura, an only child, is stunned when DNA tests confirm that the murdered woman is her twin sister.

A good thriller. I don't have any experience with this author, but the book was enough of a stand-alone that I didn't feel like I was missing out by not starting with book #1 featuring this character.

I've read elsewhere that it's great for a medical mystery, but I don't really consider it a medical mystery. Sure, the main character is a Medical Examiner, but the only medical jargon is appropriate when describing causes of death. (Or maybe I'm too steeped in Discovery Channel medical shows and Kathy Reichs' "Bones" novels)

A little gory, but not done to death. The premise is creepy, and the ending might surprise you.

In the prologue to this Rizzoli and Isles thriller, a teenage girl is lured into the woods by a handsome classmate and then left in a pit to die. The boys name is Elijah Lanks.

The scene then switches over to Dr. Maura Isles visiting the catacombs under the city of lights, Paris, during a pathology conference. She returns home to find police cruisers with flashing lights outside of her home and Detective Jane Rizzoli on her front lawn with a puzzled expression on her face.

A dead woman has been found in a car parked on Mauras street, and the corpse is Mauras doublean identical twin. The corpse shares not only her birth date but her blood type. Maura, an adoptee, knows nothing about her birth mother or any family still living. Discovering that the same lawyer who handled Mauras adoption also handled the adoption of the dead woman is the starting point for Mauras journey to find her birth mother.

Janes investigation converges with Mauras personal journey. Jane realizes that the killeror killersare inextricably linked to Mauras past (and present), and Maura may be the next target. Jane finds Mauras birth mother, and shes not a mother to love.

Meanwhile, a serial killer is abducting pregnant women. One of his final victims, a pregnant unhappy woman named Mattie Purviswho has just realized that her husband is cheating on heris taken from her home. Ironically enough, she becomes the real hero of the book, not Jane or Maura, although they do have their moments. This is particularly true of Jane, who is 8 months pregnant in this book. The storys POV shifts between Jane, Maura, and Mattie. Jane is competent and strong, and Maura is the same with an appealing vulnerability.

The plot device of twins separated at birth has been done before, and better, but Gerritsens story is intense and personal. The melodrama that often characterizes her other Rizzoli and Isles novels is noticeably lessened here.

"Dr. Maura Isles makes her living dealing with death. As a pathologist in a major metropolitan city, she has seen more than her share of corpses every day - many of them victims of violent murder. But never before has her blood run cold, and never has the grim expression "dead ringer" rung so terrifyingly true. Because never before has the lifeless body on the medical examiner's table been her own." "Yet there can be no denying the mind-reeling evidence before her shocked eyes and those of her colleagues, including Detective Jane Rizzoli: the woman found shot to death outside Maura's home is the mirror image of Maura, down to the most intimate physical nuances. Even more chilling is the discovery that they share the same birth date and blood type. For the stunned Maura, an only child, there can be just one explanation. And when a DNA test confirms that Maura's mysterious doppelganger is in fact her twin sister, an already bizarre murder investigation becomes a disturbing and dangerous excursion into a past full of dark secrets." Searching for answers, Maura is drawn to a seaside town in Maine where other horrifying surprises await. But perhaps more frightening, an unknown murderer is at large on a cross-country killing spree. To stop the massacre and uncover the twisted truth about her own roots, Maura must probe her first living subject: the mother that she never knew...an icy and cunning woman who could be responsible for giving Maura life - and who just may have a plan to take it away.

This one was GREAT! If you like the series with Dr. Maura Isles, this is a wonderful book. It keeps you guessing until the end. WOW!

This was my first Det. Rizzoli and Dr. Isles book, but won't be my last. The fact that I didn't start at Book #1 didn't hinder me at all. The reader is woven into the lives and storyline so quickly and well that you don't know you're missing any previous books. Body Double takes the reader into the mind(s) of a horrible serial killer and doesn't let go. A few good twists and turns along the way, some great police work, and excellent character development made it hard to put this book down. Tightly-plotted about a hunt for a serial killer that is kicked off when the main character, Dr. Maura Isles, arrives at a murder scene to discover that the victim looks exactly like her.

One question leads to another as the investigation unrolls, and the careful reader will probably see most of the big reveals coming, but it's a satisfying trip.

This is part of Gerritsen's "Rizzoli & Isles" series, but stands well alone.

The woman found shot to death outside Maura's home is the mirror image of Maura, down to the most intimate physical nuances. They even share the same birthdate and blood type. But Maura is an only child.

Dr. Maura Isles, Boston medical examiner, makes her living dealing with death, and sees more than her share of corpses every day. But never before has her blood run cold, and never has the grim expression "dead ringer" rung so terrifyingly true. Because never before has the lifeless body on the medical examiner's table been her own.

FROM THE PUBLISHER
