The story telling is divine and substantive. It is a captivating look at a time period centered around America's cultural evolution and brings some balance to some controversial subjects and the realization that our culture is a bi-product of a collective consciousness of its people. I found myself reading it very slowly to take in every word - the characters are rich and the reading is satisfying and thought provoking.

This was a very good book, had it read in 2 days. It is such a good read. It had me hanging on every page. The characters were real and the author's relationship will surprise you!

The cover of the book and the name evoked a particular time period and maybe a type of story line. The time period was right but the story was so far from what I could have guessed.
It is so interesting. So unique. The places this woman's life went from childhood into mature adulthood make you want to keep rooting for her. It's not frilly or cute, but very serious but not to where you cry.
This might be confusing, but I don't want to give any of the story away. I hate when people tell you the whole story line in a review. It is worth reading. Thought provoking.

Great book about a young girl who is pulled out of school by her father and later, after many trials, becomes a nurse for a "colored doctor" who does abortions along with his regular medical pracice. He his very active in politics and helps many of the local blacks get an education, sports team, builds a colored "Y". He is a very elegant man, who dresses well and has a big car and chauffeur. The characters are deeply explored and the writing is really good too. Definitely one to pass around to your girlfriends.
Other than the subject matter which is thought provoking, I especially enjoyed this book because it is set in Central Pennsylvania where I was born and raised. The author did good research of the area.
Gives one an idea of the difficulties facing some who lived during the Great Depression.
