This book is amazing, and among my favorites by Pierce, but I have to say it didn't live up to my standards from the first book, Terrier. There were almost no familiar characters other than Beka who played a major role, and it left you adrift as you were fighting your way through the plot itself. Also, Beka seemed to have very few connections to the characters in Port Caynn. The thing that bothered me most, though, was that there were hints and clues that were never followed up on that in Terrier would have been. I started the book expecting the style to be almost the same, but was thrown off until I got used to dropping little details. However, this book also had some things I thought Pierce improved on. There was only one mystery going on, making it easier to follow, and there didn't seem to be quite as many supporting characters (and therefore names to remember- one of the things I find difficult in many of Pierce's books). The plot itself was engaging, with just as many twists as the first book, which kept me engaged until the end, so overall I'd say a very good read, but definitely not one to pick up before reading the prequel.
