When Capt. William Laurence finds he is shipwrecked on the shores of Japan he has no memory of the previous several years. He doesn't remember Temeraire or nor being an English aviator. And, he doesn't remember being swept overboard during a vicious storm. As Japan does not welcome foreigners of any kind, he has falled into a dangerous arena where he may lose his life. Laurence has no memory to deal with a chaotic political situation. After numerous adventures here, the crew extracts itself to travel to China in a diplomatic effort to encourage China to fight Napoleon.

Across the ocean, Napoleon spearheads a larger than ever army to conquer Russia but Temeraire and Laurence are too far away to help until they can persuade China to help in the fight. But in China, too, they find a tenuous political situation which must be resolved before the country commits itself and its dragons to the war. And, they make an enemy they will encounter again.

For Laurence, memories gradually emerge when Temeraire and William reunite. Still, he recalls nothing of their friendship and Temeraire blames himself for failing to protect Laurence. As for Laurence, should he view the dragon as friend, animal or weapon? After their Chinese experiences, Laurence and Temeraire travel to Russia to fight Napoleon with the Chinese dragons and the tale continues.

This is a fascinating series, embellished by the author's skill in creating an alternate fantasy set in a dangerous time period. In novel after novel the reader follows Laurence and Temeraire in their action packed adventures. Great imagination. Great writing. Great plot and a most entertaining series for fantasy lovers.
