I went into this book totally expecting not to like it, but totally loved it. I received this book as a review copy. The day I got it my mom took it home with her since I was reading other stuff. She brought it back the next day and didn't speak very highly of it.
I picked it up that night anyway wanting to find out what she didn't like about it since we usually have the same taste. The story moved at a fast pace and was interesting. In the first chapter youre not quite sure whats going on I kept thinking this can't be the first book but it is. This is what my mom didn't like she thought there was not enough explanation in the beginning.
Youre not quite sure what Evalle Kincaid is you know she is part Belador but not what else is mixed in her blood. She is on the fringe of Belador society treated as an outcast and lucky to not be in a cage. She finds herself being framed for the murder of a young girl and only has a couple of days to solve the murder or she will be caged. There are however more pressing matters also going. Evalle and her fellow warriors must find a stone before it causes a war that will eradicate her people.
What I didnt like was a problem I have with many urban fantasy or paranormal romances. At some point in Evalles life she has been sexually assaulted by a doctor who used to take care of her. Why I ask does the main character have to be sexually abused or raped for her to be a strong character who will never let anyone get them down again. Why cant she just be a kick as Belador because thats who she is. Women can have inner strength without some major life altering event like rape. Shame on your Dianna Love and Sherrilyn Kenyon. She could have been exactly the same person because of the was she was treated by her people without the teenage sexual assault.
Overlooking the past sexual assault I really and truly enjoyed this book. I can't wait to read the next book to find out who Evalle ends up with.

If you are expecting a typical Sherrilyn Kenynon and Dianna Love paranormal/new world romance, you are going to be disappointed.
This was more of a fantasy world action packed book I couldn't put down. Imagine Dark-hunters mixed with the BADD agency with a little bit of aliens thrown in and you get this. It had sexy alpha males and the kick butt Evalle who was always on the verge of being locked up by the people she protected simply for being a half breed.
It was kind of confusing in the beginning to learn all the people involved in this world and takes a bit of muddling through. Information was also very redundant in the beginning but 1/3 into the book everything smooths out.
Well worth the read. I can't wait to read more about Evalle and also the rest of the gang. You definitely get some nice teasers for future stories.

Classic action by Kenyon, but not as must lusty stuff
I ordered this book because I love Sherrilyn's books. It is fast moving and interesting... and confusing. The authors lightly touch on previous events to explain the story line but it's like going to see Harry Potter's last movie without reading the books or seeing the previous movies! Answers can be found in Love's story in the anthology "Dead after Dark". Ha ha, jokes on me. I have ordered. Overall a great story about shifters, witches and whatever a Belador is. I still don't know.
I picked this book up on a trading website on a whim. It just looked good, nothing more than that, wasn't sure about it, and it has sat in my to read pile for almost a year because I have had other things that I was interested in or that about to read. Yesterday, I needed a read, nothing in the house and I looked at this book and I thought why not. Oh am I glad I picked it up!
First off, this is a paranormal, alternative life, society book in that the world is here but there are paranormal, or others living in it protecting the humans without them knowing about them. I know, the standard, true, but this is written in a different way, something that just made sense in a way and pulled you in and made you want to uncover that world and figure it out and be a part of it. I couldn't put the book down! Literally, it's 519 pages that I read in one day! It had that much pull!
Evalle (E-val) is the main character, she doesn't really fit the human world or the Belador world. The Belador's take care of the human world. Although Evalle fights for the Belador's and claims to be part of them, they don't trust her or claim her as part of them. She is only half Belador. We see small glimpses of her past, which help us to understand her trust issues, but there is so much of her past that we are still, even at the end of the book left wondering about. Her loyalty and true allegiances are seen.
A number of other characters enter this book that make it interesting and exciting and keep you guessing as to what is going to happen, who the good guys are and who the bad guys are and what is really going to happen.
The book ends on a cliffhanger of a note, which has me in a panic searching for the next book in the series to get my fix. This was such a good book and I felt for the characters and enjoyed the world in which they lived and this was written. I so want to go back.

very disappointing. story rambles w/too many characters & creatures. takes too long for story to build & progress. was so bored did not finish the book!! definitely not up to her usual standards.
Great start to a new series.
