My first Box book. Wasn't sure about it when I started but I enjoyed it have decided I will read more of the Joe Pickett series.

The adventures of being a game warden, in this case an ex-warden. Joe finds himself going back nearly 10 years for information to get the murderer of hunters and what he finds is surprising to find the one person he didn't at first suspect.
This novel follows Free Fire in the Joe Pickett series. They are all good reads. I never get bored reading C. J. Box's depiction of Wyoming's wilderness and the tales are always enthralling and creative. I fear Joe Pickett will be out of a job soon as many of the main series character 'bad' guys seem to be dying off.
Joe Pickett doesn't know who the murderer is, but using his boss(!) as bait, he'll stop the "Blood Trail."
As usual C.J. Box gives you a ride you won't soon forget. Your favorite game warden Joe Pickett is recruited by the Governor to look into hideous crimes, where hunter's during elk season are being stalked and become the hunted. Chilling tale especially for any of us that have been in the outdoors by ourselves to hunt game. As Joe Pickett mentioned several times in this novel "you can feel the hair on your neck stand up"! Box has a way of racheting up the story to get your full attention, so much so I find it hard to put any of his books down for long, as I have to read furiously into the night to see how Joe Pickett cracks the case! As always Joe can get himself into a heap of trouble with about anyone or everyone around him, from the governor to even his own family and neighbors. He is one of my favorite characters in the many books I read. If you haven't read any of C.J. Box's novels and series with Joe Pickett, you are really missing out. This one as all of them will give you many sleepless nights!

8th in the series with Joe Pickett, Wyoming game warden, not a problem if you haven't read the others although Nate Romanowski might puzzle you. Joe is still on call for "special" jobs for Governor Rulon. This time he's called out to a scene where a hunter has been shot, gutted and strung up like an elk. It turns out this is not the first hunter who's been treated as a prey animal, and the Wyoming hunting season with all those dollars is in jeopardy. To make it worse, a famous anti-hunting activist is on the scene and Joe's purported supervisor, who's hated Joe from the beginning, is suddenly making nice. But the investigation goes pear-shaped as soon as an expert tracker is brought in. Joe convinces the governor to spring Nate Romanowski from prison and then it gets even more bizarre. There is a certain scene maybe 3/4 of the way through where the identity of the killer becomes obvious. Box writes a few scenes from the POV of the killer, which I didn't think were terribly convincing, but it is different than his usual. Entertaining and fast-paced as always, and I expect Joe to be in even more hot water than usual in the next book.
The next chapter in C J Box's Joe Pickett saga provides an interesting plot, good characterizations, and the requisite amount of bold and guts. I rank it as one of his best.

Another excellent entry in the Joe Pickett series. I have been reading these in order and they just seem to get better and better. In this one, someone is hunting and killing hunters. It appears that the perpetrator is making these kills because he is against the hunting of animals...but is this the real reason? Why is the killer leaving a red poker chip next to each victim as a calling card? And why does it appear that the victims knew each other? And then why is Pickett's boss, Randy Pope, so concerned about all this? Joe is drawn into this investigation at the behest of the governor and along the why he is able to get Nate Romanowski released from FBI custody to help out. Again, this was one of Box's best and I was surprised by the ending. High recommendation!
