Brilliant and engrossing mystery! I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book! Cat Ferry, a forensic expert finds that she is connected with a recent string of murders.
Helpful Score: 7
A really gripping mystery. A somewhat "flawed" detective in Mississippi finds the answers to several murders through memories of her own very unhappy childhood.Very well written.
Helpful Score: 6
This is, hands down, one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's a complex layering of mysteries (one a murder spree) and secrets that slowly is revealed to the reader. Highly recommended; subject matter may be difficult for some (about child abuse).

A detective who is struggling with emotional problems while trying to unravel a murder mystery finds secrets buried in her past in this thriller. I loved this book. I got it from the library, then went out and bought it so I'd have a copy to keep. Excellent.

This book provides a chilling look into the struggles of individuals who have been molested. It will keep you guessing who the "bad guy" is throughout the book.

Sex, drugs, and murders past and present fill this book. Cat Ferry, forensic odontologist, searches for a serial murderer of middle-aged men and, in the process, has to come to terms with her own troubled past and uncertain future. Tough issues are dealt with in this book; among them, child sexual abuse, so be aware that it's a heavy read.
Helpful Score: 3
This is a great suspense story. YOu have Cat Ferry returning to her home town fighting not only her own demons but tyring to link a present-day killer to her past. Greg Iles is one author that can keep you reading from start to finish.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of twists and turns, so it kept me starved for more. Greg Iles is really great!

Hope for those detectives who are bipolar, alcoholic, pregnant, depressed and sexually abused as children - in the form of spunky and suffering forensic expert "Cat Ferry" who solves the mystery of her childhood trauma.

A little too long, but it kept me interested. The topic is a little hard to take at times (sexual abuse of children).

I could not put this book down! I was totally engrossed from start to finish! Yeah, it probably could've stood to be summed up about 100 pages sooner, but it didn't really hinder my enjoyment of the book. The subject matter of childhood sexual abuse and repressed memories is dark, and deeply disturbing, but the storyline is such that you can't help but be sucked in.
The main character, Cat, was a seriously damaged soul and a psychological mess. But, the author did an incredible job of delving into her heart and mind and making you care about her and the problems she faced. It was easy to feel her pain and her desperation for answers concerning her past. A great example of what good character development should be! It's mind boggling to me that this character was written by a man! I was amazed at the depth to which he took the character and addressed certain other issues. Given the scope of her flaws, it was appreciated that she wasn't portrayed as weak and helpless or over-extended to superwoman status. There were other characters like Pearlie and Luke who were also equally intriguing.
While certain parts were pretty predictable, Iles is a master storyteller and it didn't detract much from the story. The fact that it was a two-layered mystery with Cat also assisting the police and FBI in solving a series of murders kept the story balanced and more interesting. It certainly helped that there was a steady flow of action and enough twists and turns to keep me wondering what would happen next!
Iles is a favorite author of mine, and while I haven't read all of his books, each one leaves me eagerly looking for the next one

I literally could not read this one fast enough, and all the cliches about keeping someone up past their bedtime and not being able to turn the pages fast enough actually do apply to this one. Be prepared to want to read non-stop!! It is rare that I say that about ANY book, but this one was definitely one of those!

While I did like this book quite a lot it was an emotionally difficult read.

Not his best--of course, Greg Iles at his worst is still head and shoulders above the crowd, but I think he was a little burned out from writing The Footprints of God when he did this one.

This is my first book by G. Iles. He is a great writer. He has full character development, keeps you guessing all the way. Intricate plot. Will definitely be reading more of Mr. Iles. Highly recommended.

Greg Iles at his best! Our heroine, Cat Ferry, is dealing with deep-rooted trauma from her childhood that would leave most of us incapacitated, but she forges ahead to unravel the secrets from her past. Fast-paced, heart-breaking at times and hard to put down! I highly recommend this one.

Excellent story, and Cat Ferry is my favorite of all his female characters to date!! Iles delivers again, no surprise there!

Buried in this massive book are two compelling mysteries - a serial murder case set in New Orleans, Louisiana, and a more personal family drama set in Natchez, Mississippi. While both stories interested me and were well written, I found myself wondering whether a third of the book could have been cut without compromising the plot. That said, the story illustrates well the issues of repressed memory, child abuse, family secrets and revenge.

A forensic odontologist working on a case in New Orleans has personal problems causing panic attacks. Reaching her breaking point, she decides to go to her hometown to try to regain control. An accidental spill of some of her chemicals reveals bloody footprints. She begins searching for answers to determine if these footprints are associated with her father's murder when she was 8 years old. Really enjoyed this book.

From Publishers Weekly
Iles's previous thriller, 2003's provocative The Footprints of God, featured an omnipotent supercomputer and an on-the-run duo racing around the globe from North Carolina to Jerusalem. This time, Iles returns to more familiar ground: Natchez, Miss.; New Orleans; and the Mississippi delta, where a serial predator has been killing middle-aged men. Forensic odontologist Cat Ferry, an expert on teeth and the damage they can inflict, is called in by the New Orleans PD to explain the bite marks found on the bodies. Cat, the alcoholic granddaughter of Dr. William Kirkland, owner of the sprawling Malmaison estate and the richest, most powerful man in Natchez, has solved previous murders with her married detective lover, Sean Regan. This time, though, she's pregnant with Sean's baby, and this plus the discovery of old bloody footprints hidden in the carpet fibers of her Malmaison childhood bedroom threaten to plummet her into the depression that's plagued her since she was 15. She thinks one footprint might be hers, made on the night her father died of an ill-explained gunshot wound. Iles weaves in dark strains of child sexual abuse and the resulting repressed memories as Cat searches for the serial killer and for answers about her father's death. This overlong novel lacks the scintillating originality that made Iles's last outing so memorable, but he ties up all the loose ends in an exciting climax.

All of his books are excellent!
mark this book did not finish. i am usually a big fan of this author and when the story of a forensic odentologist came along i knew it was for me. but then it winds it's way to incest and sexual abuse. i have trouble reading about this subjet
Getting to know Cat the odontologist with her panic attacks and blackouts remind you of real life the secrets that she uncovers can destroy her or make her stronger .you decide as you are pulled into the mystery. i hope you enjoy it as much as i did.
It is so hard to believe that this was written by a man. His feeling and depth of his characters are amazing. Iles's has somehow found a way to put together a page turner about the unspeakable acts humans do to each other with a twist of science.
This was so suspenseful - kept me guessing until the end. Lots of little twists. It's the first I have read from Greg Iles, and I will definitely be back for more!
Not his best, but certainly worth the read
