I'm usually so-so about Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon books--I'll read one every year or two, just to see how they're going. This one was good, but not as good as some of the others. (Blind Descent is my favorite.)

I felt that this one dragged things out many (many!) pages beyond what was necessary to tell the story. Nevertheless, it was a clever mystery and I did care about the characters and enjoyed the unraveling of the clues and eventual solution to the mystery.

I visited the Canadian Waterton Lakes National Park--the continuation of Glacier National Park across the border in Canada--a year or two ago, and it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. The book didn't really deliver the look and feel of this marvelous place, but it was still fun.

If you like any of the Barr books, you'll like this one.

Nature, man or something else?

Anna Pigeon faces a real puzzle in this story as she struggles to make sense of nature's way after being attacked by a grizzly and subsequently finding a murdered and disfigured hiker. This is a well thought out plot with plenty of clues sprinkled throughout, which only in hindsight lead up to the unexpected conclusion. Nevada Barr brings you right inside Anna's mind where you share Anna's full range of emotions as she fights to maintain her beloved connection with nature and the wilderness.

In Blood Lure, Anna Pigeon returns to the West, where she is sent on a training assignment to study grizzly bears in Waterton/Glacier National Peace Park, straddling the border between Montana and Canada. But back in her beloved mountains, where the air is pure and cool, Anna fails to experience the spiritual renewal she expected. Instead, nature seems to have become twisted, carrying a malevolence almost human in its focus." "Along with a bear researcher, Joan Rand, and a volatile and unpredictable teenage boy, Anna hikes the back country, seeking signs of the bears. On their second night out, the tables are turned: one of the bears comes looking for them. Daybreak finds the boy missing and a camper dead, her neck snapped, the flesh of her face cut away. Feeling betrayed by nature and humanity, Anna must find the beast stalking the trails - and enter deep into a gripping wilderness life-or-death mystery

This is a lively book with a fast-moving plot. And while the plot is zipping along, the author throws in lots of information about Glacier National Park and life as a ranger. The ending was really surprising but somewhat unbelievable. I also found the ending abrupt. None the less, it was a great read, fast and engrossing.

Not one of her best. The ending was a little too far "out there" in terms of reality.

I think this is the best Pigeon adventure that I've read. I love the suspense and fright when she is confronted with an eleven foot Grizzly. The mystery is good and hard to guess and the descriptions of Glacier Park are beautiful. I really enjoyed this book.

As with all the Anna Pigeon books, this one started off strong on the first page and continued to hold my interest until the very end. There was very little about Anna's personal life in this book, which appeals to some readers. Personally, I enjoy learning more about her when she's not on duty. But, overall, I rate the book quite highly and will, of course, continue to read other Anna Pigeon novels.

From Pulbisher's Weekly:
The latest entry in this excellent series featuring National Park Service ranger Anna Pigeon is one of Barr's best. Anna has been assigned to work temporarily in Montana's Glacier National Park, where she seems more at home than in her recent forays to East Coast parks, and learns how to do DNA studies on wildlife by working with a biologist, Joan, on a study of grizzly bears. Anna, Joan and a young, inexperienced volunteer, Rory, are sent out into the park's wilderness areas to set lures for the grizzlies. They use a powerful and nasty-smelling concoction, mixed with cow's blood, that the grizzlies find irresistible. Once the bears rub up against the trees or barbed wire that have been coated with the lure, samples of their DNA can be collected from the hair and skin left behind. In their remote campsite one night, Anna and Joan amazingly survive a grizzly bear attack on their tents unscathed, only to find that Rory has gone missing. As park rangers and rescue teams hike the mountainous park looking for the missing teenager, they find instead the dead body of a woman whose face has been horribly mutilated. Rory is an obvious suspect, as is the bear who attacked the camp. Barr focuses on the wilderness park and its endangered population of grizzlies rather than on Anna's personal life and problems, and this makes for a tightly plotted, satisfying read. The author's masterful descriptions of the natural world immeasurably enhance an exciting, suspenseful story that is sure to flirt with bestseller lists.

Park ranger Anna Pigeon, the fortyish heroine of Barr\'s popular series, is back, tracking grizzlies through the unforgiving landscape of Glacier National Park as part of a scientific investigation that\'s outlined with more detail than anyone who\'s not totally fascinated by these awesome animals will care about. In fact, the description of what actually goes into the lures set to attract the bears so they can be tagged and counted is guaranteed to rumble the strongest stomach--but that\'s just the back story in this newest Pigeon adventure. When the mutilated body of the stepmother of one of the bear trackers turns up in a remote corner of the park, and it becomes clear that she met death at the hands of a human rather than the claws of a grizzly, Anna goes on the hunt for the killer.

Four hundred pounds or more of muscle. Saw-toothed canines. Four-inch claws. Nasty temper...Even Anna Pigeon, the district park ranger who strides fearlessly through this invigorating series, is forced to reexamine her spiritural connection to all of God's creatures when she is assigned to work on a scientific project that has her hanging out lures of blood and guts to attract the big grizzlies in Glacier National Park. Anna still manages to snatch those occasional moments of solitary communing with nature that make her an inspirational wilderness guide. But there's no time for meditation when a rampaging bear attacks the researchers' campsite...
