This is my first book by Karen Young and I found her writing style engaging. I usually avoid Christian Fiction but started reading before I found out that this is the genre of this book. I find that in Christian Fiction novels, the plot is often a second consideration. This book blew away my perceptions of this type of fiction. It is captivating from the first page; there's a murder mystery included. I only gave this book a four star rating because it was too easy to figure out the murderer.
Camille St. James has an engrossing career as a professor at a local college and leader of The Truth Project, a group whose mission is to exonerate innocent prisoners on death row. Their latest work was for Chester Pelham, a mentally-challenged man convicted of murdering a woman. Catastrophically, another woman was murdered in the same way within hours of Chester's release. Emotions are high in the police department (that was accused of bungling the entire case) and Chester winds up in a coma after his arrest.
Camille's baby (The Truth Project) is under a cloud of suspicion and she is forced into a long vacation by her employer. Even worse, Camille finds that the murdered woman is none other than her ex-husband's beloved sister.
When Camille goes to extend her condolences to her former husband, it is the first time they have spoken in 7 years (since their divorce). Jack has a very interesting back story; he was a high-powered lawyer who went to prison for involuntary manslaughter. He was driving drunk. During his time in prison, he decided to follow God and become a minister.
Camille returns to Blood Bayou to talk to him personally because she knows he will consider her responsible for his sister's death. While there, Camille becomes uncomfortable with the changes in Jack. She does not know if she believes this odd conversion. What Camille does not realize is that Jack still loves her. When threats and accidents escalate, Jack stays close to Camille, trying to protect her.
This is definitely not a cozy novel. Bodies pile up along the way to the solution. But, for a crackling good read, grab a copy!
