Anthony Burgess was unsurpassed at churning out memorable fodder for the up-market press." Mainly a collection of book reviews, this gigantic anthology covers a staggering variety of topics, everything from haute couture to semiotics. I hereby proclaim that this is the best bedside book ever written. You can read a few articles, chortle, and then drift into unconsciousness dreaming that youre a wonderfully urbane, omni-lingual cosmopolitan like Burgess instead of what you really are: a soulless corporate drone, over-educated and under-employed.

(NB: Check out his prophetic review of Holy Blood, Holy Grail on pp. 33-35. Finding the authors conspiracy theories entertaining but unconvincing, Burgess concludes, It is typical of my unregenerable soul that I can only see this as a marvelous theme for a novel. Perhaps Irving Wallace or Morris West is already writing it. Or perhaps a young Dan Brown.)
