FBI Agent Kiera O'Shay is on a mission to save a young boy named Mateo. She has tracked him to a compound where Federal Agents are ready to rescue a group of children. Among the agents is Kiera's ex, Lucas Ransom. Even though they haven't seen each other in three years, both feel that they made a mistake when they broke up.

Years ago, Luke and Kiera were members of a group of firefighters who were exposed to dangerous chemicals. Those chemicals left each member of their team with a different power. Kiera and Luke quickly realize that Mateo also has powers after being used by the government for experimental testing. Now a government agency is searching for Mateo and will stop at nothing to get him back.

Describing this series is kind of hard. It feels like romantic suspense, but it has paranormal elements. The team of former firefighters reminds me a little bit like a group of superheroes. I enjoyed the action and suspense portions of the story. The helped with the pacing of the story. I did not like the romance portion. Luke and Kiera broke up years ago because he wanted a family and she had major commitment issues. This time around they have the same problem. Kiera would realize she can't live without him and promise to give their relationship a try. An hour later she would back out and say she just couldn't do it. This happened a couple of times and drove me absolutely nuts. My rating: 3.5 Stars.

Seriously, what is wrong with me? Joan Swan is THE WORST AUTHOR EVER....why did I buy her 2nd book Blaze when the first book was SO TERRIBLE?!?

Paranormal suspense is a fine genre...as long as it's combined with some romance. Or maybe a lot of romance. A good run of steamy hot sex scenes makes a paranormally-enhanced hero that much more desirable.

Swan writes NO ROMANCE. Zero, zip, zilch, nada. Not even an illicit kiss between characters. Sometimes they briefly think about how the used to be hot for each other...but that's about it.

She gets SO bogged down in nitty-gritty fight scene trauma military maneuver details that her books COMPLETELY LACK A PLOT. They just move from one detailed OH-NO edge of your seat trauma to another. YAWN.

B-O-R-I-N-G.

Even skimming & reading the last chapter didn't matter. I still didn't care. $15 I'll never get back...and an hour of my time wasted. She's going on my NEVER READ list...she's not even worth a free swap.
