Although there are elements of horror just beneath the surface, this is more of a story of a dysfunctional Southern family, dominated by its matriarch who will sacrifice her own happiness to thwart those she disagrees with. The writing is typically McDowell -- meaning it's wonderful. You get swept up into the family as it evolves and changes and can sympathize with Elinor despite her, shall we say, peculiarities. (Lots of undercurrents -- sorry, bad pun)
