I was pleasantly surprised by this first book in a three book series. I found myself really liking the main character, who is a female bounty hunter. I have already started reading the second book and hope it's as good as this one.

Dixie Flannigan is an ex lawyer turned bounty hunter. She is one tough cookie.
When her friend asks her to trace down a guy that got scared about his chances in a case he is being prosecuted for, she gets involved with more than she bargained for.
Parker Dann is being prosecuted for killing a child with his car while driving drunk. He doesn't beleive he did it. Problem is he doesn't remember. You see he WAS blind drunk that night.
This is a fun read as a no nonsense Dixie takes us on an exciting cross country trip to find this horrible lowlife. Or is he ?!

After ten years in the Houston DA's office, watching the guilty get off on technicalities, Dixie Flannigan was hardened, worn-out, and ready for a more hands-on style of justice. So she left it all behind to become a bounty hunter. Now, free to bring in criminals with no holds barred, she's already a local legend in the jails and courtrooms for her combination of brains, cunning, and macho style. But she's about to discover that being tough as nails is harder than it looks. When her old friend Belle Richards - "Texas's Hottest Defense Lawyer" - calls in a favor two nights before Christmas, Dixie has no intention of taking the job. If she doesn't show up for her family's Christmas dinner, she'll be in the doghouse again. Then Dixie finds out Belle's client is an accused child-killer who ran down an eIeven-year-old girl during a drunk and claims not to remember it. Parker Dann looks guilty as hell to the jury, and Belle is sure Dann's going to jump bail to save himself ten-to-twenty in prison. Dixie tells herself she's taking the job to see that justice is served and Dann faces his punishment, but she's really out for some private revenge on the child predators of the world. But what she should have remembered - and what she's about to learn the hard way - is that Lady Justice herself can be a bitch. Dixie tracks Dann to the wilds of North Dakota and has him safely cuffed and shackled in the back of her Mustang, when a massive Blue Norther blizzard hits. It will take every ounce of her Superbitch abilities to get them back to Texas in one piece, hopefully before Dixie's bitch facade cracks...and before she starts believing that Parker Dann - drunk, child-killer, and bail jumper - is innocent.

Fun series. For fans of Janet Evanovich or Sue Grafton. Not Stephanie Plum, but still worthwhile.

Female bounty hunter falling for one of the criminals she picked up. Did he really get so drunk that he forgot he ran a little girl over? Kept me interested....

This is the opening salvo of a feisty new bounty-hunter operating out of Houston, Texas. If this is an example of the other three books in this series -- WOW! Buckle up your seat belt and get ready to ride!

Dixie Flanagan is an almost 40 year-old lawyer who got tired of aiding-and-abetting scumbags avoid jail-time for their crimes. So she decided to do something that would help the accused stay in jail find them and escort them to the non-luxury accommodations of the Houston jail.

This first case is a doozy: Her best friend, also a lawyer, tells her that a case is going badly for a man accused of running over a child. Now that the court is closed for the Christmas holidays, the lawyer KNOWS the accused (Parker Dunn) has skipped town. She wants Dixie to find the man and haul him back to Houston before his case resumes. Dixie must do it on the quiet because if the law or courts get wind of Parkers error in judgment, he would automatically lose the case and get a one-way ticket to jail.

This author can write action scenes with the best of them. Much of the book is an adrenalin rush; the plot moves quickly, the characters are well-rounded and the clock is ticking. Dixie is a likeable heroine with skills and smarts aplenty. She is a legend among the inmates because of her clever and sometimes outrageous tricks to catch skips.

Of course, one is drawn to compare Janet Evanovichs bounty hunter with this one. For my dime, they dont operate on the same planet. Evanovichs Stephanie Plum is a cartoon: she jokes, has lusty thoughts (and acts on those thoughts) and watches as her cars are blown up by the bad guys. Lest you think I havent read enough Evanovich to make this sweeping statement, Ive read them all plus most of the other books by this author.

Rogers Dixie is a driven woman; her back story plays an important part in this particular story. Dixie bleeds and makes mistakes shes real. The only thing I thought was tacky was the title; the coarsening of American English is a pet concern of mine. But as a new author, I presume she wanted to make a splash at the book stores; certainly the title gets ones attention. 4.5 to 5 stars

Amazon.com: "It's not surprising that Dixie Flannigan comes across as 250 pounds of attitude stuffed into a 120-pound package. As a Texas prosecutor turned bounty hunter, Dixie has to intimidate a collection of much larger males into believing she's capable of doing them serious harm if they try to escape her clutches. In her debut thriller, Chris Rogers pushes just hard enough on Dixie's tough-talking image to make her believable, and then drops her into a story where her smartness and humanity become equally important. Transporting an escaped prisoner through a South Dakota snowstorm, Dixie slowly finds herself believing him when he insists that somebody else killed the 11-year-old girl he's accused of running over while drunk. We believe him, too: the wisecracking Dixie isn't the only soft touch in town.

From Library Journal: "Dixie Flannigan is a self-described "bitch," a legend in the jails of Houston, Texas, for her skills at bounty hunting, tracking, and returning the most determined bail jumpers. On Christmas Eve, she's hired to find Parker Dann, a charming alcoholic charged with vehicular homicide for allegedly running down 11-year-old Betsy Keyes as she walked to school. Dixie's search takes her to South Dakota, where she encounters her first blizzard and, unexpectedly, finds herself believing Parker's protests of innocence. When Dixie discovers that Betsy's younger sister was also killed in an "accident," terrible memories of her own childhood surface, threatening to demolish her facade of toughness. This first novel is masterful from beginning to end, and Dixie is the best new heroine to come along in years. Rogers deftly avoids expository traps, allowing Dixie's past to come out gradually as she pursues justice. And how refreshing is Parker, a male character who is warm, caring, honest...and a gourmet cook!" Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Houston bounty hunter Dixie Flannigan is about to learn that there are limits to even her toughness. Parker Dann, accused of killing a child in a drunk-driving accident, is a bail jumper fleeing the prospect of a long prison term. It will take every ounce of Dixie's Superbitch abilities to get them back to Texas in one piece, preferably before her bitch facadecracks and before she starts believing that Parker Dann is...innocent? Dixie is appealing and sympathetic - the plot is convoluted and the climax chilling. A good mystery.
