Though the writing is a bit cheesy at times, this book can be helpful in finding out what it's like to start off as a writer. It also teaches you how to find inspiration for writing just about anywhere.

This book is funny and plain out and out encouraging for those who write or ever wanted to write! I simply loved it! I used it throughout my writing course and encourage anyone who writes or is thinking about writing to read this book!

This book was a required reading for me in one of my college writing classes. I was so surprised to LOVE IT! Anne Lamott is an amazing author! This book had wonderful writing tips but keeps you laughing while you read. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who loves to write or giggle at life's ironic moments.

I read this book junior year in high school in AP Lang. It's charming, honest, and funny. Even though it was required reading, I enjoyed it.

This is a very enjoyable manual for writing and life. I had borrowed this book from my local library so many times, they told me I should buy my own copy. So I did from Paperback Swap. It had been recommended by a published writer friend and my writing group leader.
Anne Lamott is comfortable with her writing style, and her advice makes you comfortable with it as well.

I used this book in a class on argumentative prose. The book is straight forward and clearly shows an understanding and love of the craft. A good read for any beginning writer or student.
Entertaining and very useful.
Great book.

I don't feel there is much writing advice in this book and less advice on living. The writing advice is to write: there isn't any discussion on form or format. The living part is mean spirited and self absorbed. The author is very negative and fails to own her additive personality. Toward the end of the book she even claims that life is dead. I was blown away by this statement. While there are certainly problems in the world, I hardly think life is dead. Only people with closed eyes or hearts could make that statement. This book was a waste of time.
I bought this book through a book club on the reccomendations of other readers/writers and because I loved the story shared about the title. As it turns out, that was my favorite part of the book. I couldn't even finish reading it.
Loved how she explained how she ignites her creative writing juices.

Probably a great book for someone looking to get into writing. I expected it to be more humerous remembrances from a writer.

Seattle Times says: A gift to all of us mortals who write or ever wanted to write.. sidesplitting funny, patiently wise and alternately cranky and kind.
Annie Lamott takes you on a hilarious journey through the world of a writer. If you enjoy writing, and if you love the always quirky Lamott, you gotta read this book.

A thought-provoking book on being a writer. Very unique, not your usual book in this genre. A keeper!

Lamott gives some good tips and ideas on writing, also some excellent "assignments" to do. She does much of it with good wit so that it's also a fun read. If you are an inspiring writer, I would certainly recommend this book.

You'll read in reviews that Anne Lamott seems to be sitting right beside you, a long-time best friend, just seeing, and sharing the world in her unbelievably humorous way because it is, simply - the truth! This book, Bird by Bird, is on her writing classes, with good, solid advice for the would-be writer, as many pitfalls and crests as you can imagine, with food for thought, and thought for food. A great read, side-splittingly funny in and out, even if you've no aspiration to be a writer at all!
Instructions on writing.
