A beautiful and haunting story, written in sparse prose; reads like old fashioned literature. I liked this book very much. Takes place in Nova Scotia around turn-of-the-century (last one that is!) and gives you a real flavor of small town island life. A joy and refreshingly different.

A quirky book about small town life in Newfoundland in the 1800's. The characters were vey real, and exactly that, characters!
The book starts out with a confession. The writer admits to killing the keeper of the lighthouse. The rest of the story is about what led up to that murder and why. Interesting relationships between the townspeople, and an example of how people alter their lives and dreams to "get along" with the people they are surrounded by. I liked it!

This is a good, quick read. Not life-changing, heart wrenching, or bust- a- gut- laughing but still a solid, interesting book that you can finish on a plane ride, for example.

Interesting book. We read this for my art book club and most of us really enjoyed it. I certainly got a feel for Greenland and Nova Scotia in it, kind of along the lines of The Shipping News. The characters seem very real.
Simply wonderful writing. The characters are so fully drawn - the sense of time and place so detailed. I didn't want it to end.

Howard Fineman makes the place and time come alive in a gritty and dark way. I really enjoyed this book.
Loved this book from first to last page!
