I used this book in undergrad, gradschool and medschool. I highly recommend getting the big picture first. Which is that all biochemical reactions are related to make and create energy in a big way called metabolism (which you don't get until later in the book). And that you just get there by different pathways: gluconeogenisis, glycolisis, protein synthesis, protein degredation, fatty acid synthesis, fatty acid degredation, hexose monophosphate shunt, ATP synthesis, Krebs cycle and Urea cycle. Other major themes are the Membrane transportation and hormone signaling. Best advice for using this book is to get the companion workbook and do all the problems. Also get a chart with all the pathways on it. Think of it like a star map and that one pathway is a constellation. Also in terms of test taking; it will always be asked "what is the regulatory step", Henderson Hasselbac equation, and Oxygen dissociation curves, and hormone reception.
