In this cozy mystery set in southern Texas, Grandma "Biggie" Wootten Weatherford investigates several unusual happenings in their home of Job's Crossing. The story starts out with the explosion of Biggie's tenant's car in their driveway. The mystery moves on to the sudden death of the town's Mayor Gribbons while eating his favorite angel food cake dessert at the local cafe. The story is narrated by Biggie's 12-year old grandson J.R., giving the story a charming perspective.

The story is a pretty good one, but I got caught up in this more for the "southern stuff" I remember from my childhood. Does it really go on now?

If you like humor with your mystery, then you would enjoy this book. Mrs. Fiona Wooten Weatherford better known around town as Biggie is a Texas Miss Marple with an attitude. When Biggie sets her mind to it she is going to do it. Along with her eleven year old grandson, who she is raising, Biggie solves crimes. Her maid Willie Mae and Willie Mae's husband Rosebud help out with the detecting. Jr, Biggie's grandson, is sort of the narrator and will keep you amused with descriptions of the towns folk and goings on. The mayor falls face down in his dessert and is pronounced dead. Everyone thinks it is a heart attack, but not Biggie. She is sure it is murder.

I like Biggie. A southern woman with a mind of her own! In this she is being courted by a Judge, the mayor drops dead in his angel food cake, and a long lost relative shows up in town.

From back cover:

Mrs. Fiona "Biggie" Wooten Weatherford is well-known for landing five-pound catfish, mowing down mailboxes when she drives, as well as owning half the county. Now she's mobilizing the local ladies against City Hall's new garbage dump, right next to the graveyard of their forefathers -- especially James Royce Wooten, founder of the town and namesake of Biggie's eleven-year old grandson, J. R.

But when the mayor himself drops facedown in his angel food cake, Biggie smells something worse than a garbage dump. And when it comes to detecting -- helped by the ever-inquisitive J. R. and their cook Willie Mae's bayou voodoo -- she's wise as an owl and sly as a possum. Chatting up suspects and researching poisons, Biggie plans on outsmarting a killer who may be out to trash both her and J. R...
