Rick Riordan's debut novel shows he has what it takes to be a big-time player. The characters are fully formed when introduced and his masterful descriptions of San Antonio take the reader there. The plot even held up through a long string of twists and turns.

This was a rip-roaring great read every bit as good as the Percy Jackson series for kids by the same author. Interesting characters and action that never stops, well leavened with humor

A riotous good time, and a more than promising start to a fun, Big Texas series....Texas, but modern and edgy and funny...not at all kitschy.

This is a pleasant read, and if you've ever lived in the Hill Country of central Texas, you'll especially enjoy the feeling that you're right there with Tres!

Riordan has created some interesting characters in this debut novel. Navarre has a Ph.D. in medieval literature, practices Tai Chi, knows his way around Texas and has an enchilada-eating cat, Robert Johnson. Navarre's brother, Garrett, is a die-hard hippie, marijuana smoker, a Jimmy Buffett fan who is confided to a wheelchair. He lost both legs years ago trying to hop a train. Riordan also incorporates an up-close look at San Antonio along with the people who live there.Good Story opening on him moving back to town and the local police advising him not to stay. I'll read the next.

The personalities don't have enough personality; the action drags in the hot Texas sun and you have to be halfway through the book to start picking up any interest.

I really liked this book. Tres reminds me a lot of Harry Dresden without the paranormal parts.
